New Label, New Record, Same ol’ Heaviness
by: Kevin Daniels
, the five piece hardcore band hailing from Alabama, is set to release their Senior album, Cold, out May 12th, 2017 on Equal Vision Records. They’ve released a few tracks so far, “Pulling Teeth,” back in late 2016, then followed up with “Champions,” a few months ago. On their newest track, “Cursed,” they go for the gutcheck. This is the heaviness that Gideon
brings to you when you see them live, which I’ve experienced since the beginning of their career; and yet, I think this track pushes them even further into the heaviest and nastiest they’ve sounded.
The intro of “Cursed” is nothing but heavy as fuck open riffs, a screeching guitar, a slamming tempo of the drums, and bass that bring you to the “I have to fucking move” and/or ”punch something in the face” feeling, and that’s just from when the song starts. It doesn’t slow down or make you wanna stop this feeling either. Frontman Daniel McWhorter has one of my favorite hardcore vocals ever. It’s the most encouraging, yet mean as shit you can sound at the same time, and he doesn’t hold back on this song. It features a guest vocal from Knocked Loose’ Bryan Garris and totally gives you an extra kick in the gut to keep fucking moving and smashing everything around you. “Cursed” single that pushed me off the edge of uncertainty and into a blissful sphere of new music; not to detract from the other songs released, but this one hit it out of the park for me.
