After 20 years, they still haven’t turned that radio off

Reel Big Fish 29

Reel Big Fish is a name that any fan of punk rock and/or ska knows, and from my experience almost always loves. That’s why when I saw they were doing a 20th Anniversary tour for the release of their “breakout” record, Turn the Radio Off, I knew I had to see them again. I’m happy to say that even after all these years the record still holds up and, more importantly, the band still knows how to put on one of the most fun live shows you could ever hope to attend, and at the legendary Fillmore nonetheless.

Masked Intruder 01

Fans had reason to hold their valuables a little closer as Masked Intruder took the stage, playing poppy punk rock songs about stealing things, girls, and running from the cops.

Masked Intruder 08

I was somewhat familiar with the gist of the band before the show, but I wasn’t expecting such a high energy and fun performance. From Officer Bradford standing menacingly behind the band and stepping out only to give attendees the finger or tell them to settle down, to the serious ups from Intruder Green, these guys know how to put on a show that keeps the audience engaged.

Masked Intruder 15

Intruder Blue interacted with the crowd throughout the set, asking questions and making jokes about everything he saw.

Masked Intruder 11

I guess eventually the music was too much for Officer Bradford as he disappeared over the barricade with a stage dive into the crowd.

Masked Intruder 16

When he finally reappeared on stage he had ditched the cop uniform for something more.. comfortable? I overheard one person in attendance refer to his new garbs as looking very “American leather Borat.” Before the end of their set, Intruder Blue let everyone know he had a very quality VCR for sale and he needed to unload it quickly, which most people just laughed off.

Masked Intruder 23

I was approached by Intruder Blue moments later, VCR in hand. He complimented my shirt, then immediately asked if I’d like to purchase a “deluxe 4-head VCR.” I declined, but I hope he was able to move that state-of-the-art technology quickly, with no questions asked.

Masked Intruder 47

If these guys come to your area and you’re unsure as to whether or not you should go see them, do it. Leave your valuables at home, but take a few extra bucks with you and you might score a new VCR at a “low, low” price.

Reel Big Fish 08

Reel Big Fish doesn’t need an introduction. Aaron Barrett has been having a blast with his band for over two decades now, and it doesn’t look like he’s showing any signs of stopping.

Reel Big Fish 20

This tour was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the record that made people stop and take notice. Turn the Radio Off was my first exposure with the band back in 1996 so learning that they would be playing the record in its entirety put a massive smile across my face.

Reel Big Fish 36

The band hit the stage and went from zero to full speed, and didn’t slow down until the house lights came up again. They started with a couple songs from their other records, but quickly got to the business of playing through their classic record. Speaking for myself, getting to sing along to all of those songs once more made me feel like I was a kid again, and judging from the rest of the crowd’s reaction that was a common feeling.

Crowd 02

I haven’t seen them since right after they released Cheer Up and I remembered them being an absolute blast, but that was in 2003 so I expected them to have slowed down a bit. Boy, I was wrong.

Reel Big Fish 19

They were as fun as I remembered them being back then and it’s really incredible that after all these years the band is still picking it up pick it up pick it up (ahh, ska humor). Aside from playing every song from Turn the Radio Off (including the secret, hidden track), they played a handful of songs from the rest of their catalog.

Reel Big Fish 16

There was also two cover songs thrown in the mix; the first verse and chorus of a Spin Doctors song that sounded suspiciously similar to a “The Impression That I Get” from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and then they closed the night out with their incredible cover of “Take On Me” by Ah-Ha that you may have seen/heard in the film BASEketball.

Reel Big Fish 47

With so much negativity in the world lately a show like this is exactly what you need. Spend a night seeing these bands, and forget about the current state of affairs for a few hours. Go have fun, sing along, and skank it up with other people in the pit. You need this. I swear.
