Welcome to the month of Halloween
Halloween festivities? Details inside.
Happy Halloween, ya’ll! Yes, to me, it’s been Halloween since the first day of fall. What with the passing of the black moon and the petitions against racially-insensitive costumes, it’s clear that the season is well underway. Furthermore, the fact that Halloween lands on a Monday means every weekend of this month is fair game to get dressed up, drunk and out of the house. Here’s the weekly play-by-play of Halloween-oriented events in the area:
Week of 10-15:
OCT 12, 13, 16, 20, 23, 26, 27, 30, NOV 1 – Uptown Haunted Ghost Tours by Good Eats & Meets
What is it: a lovely, spoopy romp through the 4th ward, where the ethereal hostess tours you from one haunted spot to another. Beware, she’s not alone. This is perfect for date night, girls-night-out, anti-social night, and an excuse to look at the amazing houses at 4th ward that you’ll never be able to afford, even if you land that new job, because life is hard. **Enjoy RiRa’s before and after for drinks and food.
OCT 15 – 16 – Full Moon Fest at Flight · Charlotte
What is it: Of Good Nature, Through The Roots, and Sun Dried Vibes perform in the alley behind Flight. I mean, that’s pretty eerie. I guess you can drink there, feels naughty though. I’m already on edge thinking about it. Let’s go.
OCT 15-16 – Lost Hollow Music Fest Fall 2016 Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden · Belmont
What is it: The glory of flowers at this botanical garden are lit up, adding to a romantic and almost pagan autumn ambiance. Six musical acts are slated to play.
OCT 15 – Zoo Grooves Sat 6:30 PM · Asheboro
What is it:If you’re like me, you probably love everything about the zoo but one thing: the kids. Okay, maybe I’m alone in that, but I suggest you head to Asheboro zoo and find out, with live music, food vendors, costumes, and Sleepy Booty to perform.
What is it: These folks know how to get into character and drag you with them. Get dead and get drunk, all in one night! If you frequent this area anyway, you’ll probably feel over-dressed if you show up that night looking all alive and stuff. Featuring local industry makeup artists of Get Dead Crew.
Week of 16-22:
OCT 21 – Marshmello Fri 9 PM · The Fillmore Charlotte
What is it: Maybe it’s the trend of so many ‘90s teen horror flicks having dance party scenes, but whether it’s DeadMau5 or marshmello (seen below), the crowd is always prepped for something Halloweeny.
OCT 21 – 23 2016 Geek Gala: Lost in Galactic Spaceballs Hilton Charlotte Executive Park · Charlotte
What is it: This Charlotte-born convention grows before your eyes, with familiar faces if you’re at all involved in the outgoing-extroverted geek community. I implore all of you geeky hermits, though— come join the fun: board games, movie marathons, tabletop, and costumes.
What is it: Charlotte’s hip-hop scene may be a bit segmented and clicky, but everyone brings their own flavor to the potluck. 403 presents a Mob-worthy Halloween party with costumes, pizza, and proof of hard work paying off.
OCT 22 2016 Muggles Market 10 AM Hilton Charlotte Executive Park
What is it: Hosted by the aforementioned Geek Gala crew, you can expect the free-entry market to contain some weird wares. I mean, I don’t know if you-know-who is going to be selling their you-know-what, but I predict second-hand goods that are more than good, and some hand-made items that are more than just enchanted.
OCT 22 Zombie Makeup Workshop Saturday at 10 AM (During Geek Gala)
What is it: So you watch The Walking Dead and have Buffy on UltraViolet disc. Ever wonder what it’s like to have your makeup done by an industry artist? What about testing your hand at creating gore yourself? Get a taste of this at Geek Gala.
(Megan Grant and the Get Dead Crew, LLC will be doing a live 1-hour zombie make-up workshop. There is a $15 materials fee.)
Week of 23-29
OCT 28 Charlotte American Wake Tour Outpost Fri 8 PM · Aerial CLT · Charlotte
What is it: I had never heard of the band (American Murder Song) until scouring Facebook invites for Halloween. Lo and behold, I HAD heard of them: Repo! The Genetic Opera, The Devil’s Carnival, and The Devil’s Carnival: Alleluia! So, they’re performing intimate gatherings for their tour this year? Okay!
OCT 28 – 29 Boo At The Zoo – Tiger World 6PM – Rockwell NC
What is it: Two possible nights for you and the family to enjoy some rather nocturnal cats. All proceeds are helping fund larger and more amazing enclosures for these animals at this non-profit zoo. Tucked away off of Old Concord and in Rockwell, this place is literally off of the beaten path. Also, what’s scarier than the majesty of huge felines playing with pumpkins?
OCT 29 The 17th Annual Kiss 95.1 Grave Diggers Ball Featuring Afrojack Sat 6 PM · 500 N College St
What is it: I mean, you know what it is. Kiss 95.1 has this ball every year, at least since I can remember. Costumes, music, alcohol and whatnot. This year they feature Afrojackand Marc E. Bassey.
OCT 29 Halloween Bash Sat 6 PM · GroundZero · Spartanburg, SC
What is it: I would consider this less of a bash and more of a graveyard smash. (Sorry). But seriously, four metal bands of varying ilks? This event will be perfect for fans of Rapheumet’s Well (symphonic death metal),Rites to Sedition (black metal), Azymyth (melodic death metal), and Krvsade (thrash metal).
OCT 29 Halloween Party at Moochies Tavern with SugarSmaX Sat 9 PM· Matthews
What is it: Leave your bowl and spoon at home, because this is no breakfast meeting. This also isn’t an in-your-face-oh-my-god-its-basically-Halloween-lets-all-get-dressed-up-and-scare-people event. For people who don’t care SO much about Halloween, but also know that something calls to them to commune over drinks and music with friends.
OCT 29 BOOtanical Gardens at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens 11AM – 3PM – Belmont
What is it: So this event is MUCH more Halloweeny and welcomes kids in costumes (free admission). There will be snacks, drinks, and they’ll be chuckin’ pumpkins! From there, when shop closes up at 3PM, I suggest you head directly do the Schiele Museum (8 minutes down the road, see below).

OCT 29 Trail -o- Treats – Schiele Museum 4PM – 8PM – Gastonia
What is it: Continue the treats and trekking through the awesome trail at Schiele museum! Space is limited, $5-7 admission, family-oriented! You might just see myself and Mues enjoying some family-fun with our little baby, Noodlez The Beagle!
OCT 29 Bakkwoodz Halloween Bash Sat 8 PM · Silver Villa Sports Bar Grill · Kings Mountain
What is it: Although musicians aren’t announced to play, the event boasts a scary evening, with costume contests for up to $100 bucks. You might just need that money, too, because if you stay late enough to be too drunk or too exhausted to get home, they also mention some nice hotels nearby (and seriously, what’s scarier than hotel linens?).
OCT 28 Harvest Live at Newgrass Brewing Company for Halloween! Fri 9 PM Shelby
What is it: For now,the event page is rather bare, but I can imagine some harvest-oriented crafts hitting the bar and probably a nice costume contest. Check back to their Facebook for updates.
OCT 29 Fiftywatt & Sweatin Bullets Halloween at The Rockhouse! Sat 9 PM · The Rockhouse Gastonia
What is it: If there’s anything that scares you more than leaving Charlotte suburbs to hang out in Gastonia at night, I’d like to know. I’m only kidding, murder rates are plummeting! 🙂 Hauntings aside, Gastonia is becoming more and more of a worthy spot for venues and concerts, especially this one — holy crap, an $800 costume prize?? (AFK – buying 2016 Harley Quinn costume)

OCT 29 Oh Lonesome Me Halloween throw down Sat 9 PM · Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant · Shelby
What is it: Hosted by the band Oh Lonesome Me, enjoy some of Mi Pueblito’s Mexican food. I assume something spooky will happen if you show up.
Hallow’s Eve and Halloween:
OCT 31 The Chainsmokers Mon 7 PM · Bojangles’ Coliseum · Charlotte
What is it: For those of us willing to push through the Monday grind, accept that it is officially Halloween, and celebrate, The Chainsmokers are having a pretty awesome tour with their newest release Closer Ft. Halsey. No costume contests or spook-tacular things announced, but if feels-full alt rock gets you sobbing with fear-tears, get to this concert.
OCT 31 The Record Company w/ Muddy Magnolias LIVE in Charlotte, NC Mon 7 PM · Visulite Theatre
What is it: The truth hurts, and it’s also pretty scary sometimes. It seems the trend of shows on Halloween night involve down-playing the shock factor and up-playing rawness. I suggest you start your night with some awesome local haunted mazes/houses, and end the evening with something more calm like The Record Company to bleed off that adrenaline.
Well, it looks like Halloween landing on a Monday has put a damper on events for the night-of, but never fear! The entire month is scattered with all-too-worthy events from conventions to concerts and live-action zombie crawls.
