Chevelle is touring with Aeges and the Dead Deads this year. They will be in the US until October then in February they hit Europe. Chevelle is a post grunge group with metal guitars and dreary lyrics. Aeges is less dreary, with passionate vocals and  thick sonic sound,  The Dead Deads are a predominantly female band that I would call punk.

If you are not familiar with Chevelle they cite Helmet and Tool as their influences. Helmet, from the ‘90s was labeled as alternative metal. They were trashy but very sophisticated. Many of Helmet’s songs are in odd and disjointing meters. Chevelle’s sound is similar. They have some straight out angst. Their 2016 release The North Corridor has some dark tracks on it such as “Door to Door Cannibals” and “Joyride (Omen).” Chevelle lyrics are confessional at times and express such dismal states of mind as disgust and suffering.

Aeges, from L.A. will be playing tracks from their new release Weightless. “Weightless” the title track, and other tracks such as “Another Wasteland” and “All of Me” have a nice flow. They have been compared to their L.A. forerunners that developed acid rock back in the day. I can see the comparison with Aeges’ whiny guitars, some of which may or may not be slide guitar. I can hear a hint of Weezer, Pavement, and even early U2 in their music from the instrumental perspective. These similarities are very subtle. Aeges has a nice sound that mixes these different ingredients from different sources in a fresh way.

The Dead Deads are a lot of fun and no joke as far as their sound. Songs like “The Lonely Sound,” have lyrics about being bored, wasting time in bars and not being in a relationship. The Dead Deads poke fun at world. They are amusing and I found myself smiling as I waited for the next irreverent lyrical phrase to come out between measures. They cover the Motorhead classic “Ace of Spades.” They have some nice guitar work and a melody underneath their head banging exterior. They have only been together since 2014. We’ve covered them recently.
