Gin Wigmore: “Willing to Die”
The fine wine that is Gin Wigmore only gets better with age. Leading off the night with her latest single, “Willing to Die,” Wigmore knocked out hit after hit from “New Rush” to “Black Sheep” to “Written in the Water,” with a smattering of rare gems amongst them, including “Sweet Hell.” Seeing her for the second time in twelve months, this night was a refresher that an evening seeing Gin Wigmore is a religious experience like no other.
Wigmore’s extraordinary vocals and genre-hopping sound is perfectly rounded out by an all-male band uniformly dressed in head-to-toe black, topped off with a vest with their respective names embroidered in white script; these men are: Dave Goodison and John Schreffler on guitars; Steve Padin on drums; Rocco Dellaneve on keys; Joey Secchiaroli on bass.
With talent to spare exuding from the band, it is beautifully obvious that each person on that stage cherishes and revels in every last moment up there; the experience being a remarkable palate cleanser of all things negative in life.
Gin Wigmore is mesmerizing; deeply moving and inspiring – growling with intensity, then laughing with delight; she is ethereal, exhilarating, and fierce. Gracious and glowing, Gin serves up an incomparable night, showing us all why she took home the 2015 New Zealand Music Award for Best Female Solo artist – which we all know will soon be a Grammy. The band’s bookend to opener “Willing to Die” was a crushing a capella version of “I Will Love You,” accompanied by opener Matthew Santos.
When you see Gin Wigmore, you see a stage afire with love and passion – and experience a night that lifts your soul, leaving you intoxicatingly happy and hauntingly inspired.
