UK Review: Satriani brings Shockwaves to Bristol
It’s been a while since I first heard Flying In A Blue Dream by Joe Satriani and it’s still one of the greatest guitar albums I’ve ever heard, so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting to see him live. When I heard he was playing at the Colston Hall in Bristol as part of his Shockwaves tour I decided to make the seven hour round trip to see the legend play. He brought with him a rising star from the blues-rock world in the form of South African Dan Patlansky.
Dan has been receiving rave reviews for his latest album Dear Silence Thieves and has been getting a lot of airtime on Planet Rock with his latest single “Fetch Your Spade.” Having heard this as well as the rest of the album it was a somewhat bonus that he was the support. As he made his way onto the stage with the rest of his band he certainly looked relaxed considering the packed house of guitar aficionados watching.
From the off it was clear that his guitar playing was top notch albeit a different style to Joe’s. His heavy blues-rock was perhaps a bold choice to open proceedings but one that worked well. I also enjoyed his vocals that were the perfect match for his constant riffs and solo-blasts.
The highlight of his set for me was the solo at the end of it and the saying “save the best till last” fits perfectly. I don’t know exactly what he did but as soon as he flicked his guitar strap off I sat in awe as to what he was doing. We’ve all seen the clips of guitarists playing with their teeth or behind their head but this was different. Dan held onto the horn whilst playing it like a keyboard before bending and hitting the neck to make some very interesting sounds and ended with the guitar hanging from the bottom string on his fingers. He thanked the crowd for their applause and told them he would be at the merchandise stand if anyone wanted a chat. As he left the stage most of the audience left their seats either to have a chat with Dan or to refill their empty drink glasses before the main event.
As the lights went down, a few stragglers rushed for their seats and we were treated to a video display on the stage backdrop before Joe and his band made their entrance. From the off it was noticeable just how clean Joe’s guitar sounded and it was soon evident we were going to be given a visual display as well as a feast for our ears. As I, and most around me, sat in amazement at Joe’s playing, my only thoughts were how can he make it look so easy. As his hands smoothly slid up and down the neck of his guitar his fingers were a blur with every note perfect just like his cd’s.
The lighting was perfect and the graphics behind the band added that something extra to the show. We even got to hear Joe sing on the penultimate song of the night as Joe played “Big Bad Moon.” I know Joe’s not known for his vocals but he sounded great and I am sure I am not the only one who wished he would sing more. Perhaps it’s because his songs are so full of guitar it’s difficult to sing as well, but who knows. As the show came to an end, Joe and his band stood at the front of the stage taking the standing ovation from the crowd and Joe threw a few guitar plectrums out for some lucky fans to catch.
This was my second venture to the Colston Hall and just like last time the sound and the staff were fantastic but my only complaint was the number of people getting up during the show forcing everyone else in the row to get up. Only to return several minutes later and do it all again. It was not just the people at the back as even those in the posh seats at the front were up and down throughout both sets.
