River Jam Concerts at USNWC
Every Thursday and Saturday night at 7pm – 10pm, through September 24, the U.S. National Whitewater Center holds River Jam. This is a concert series that Shutter 16 has fallen in love with, so we have chosen to highlight their swell line-up and ambiance. With the summer too hot during the day, people have to find fun things to do early evening, and the concerts at River Jam begin just in time. Just before sunset, settle in to live music from near and far for free. This event only charges 5 dollars for parking and is beautiful and fun for the entire family (including dogs). Every week this event gives people a chance to discover a new band, or enjoy a local favorites in a new way.
The backdrop is non-conventional, featuring lawn seating and a view of the band and the undulating whitewater waves nearby. Anyone who has enjoyed the day-time festivities of the Whitewater Center knows the joys of people-watching and how relaxing or exhilarating the scene can be. The Pump House Biergarten features 40 taps of local and national beer selections and full-service dining at the River’s Edge Bar and Grill, so food and drinks are plentiful.
River Jam provides a unique venue which beckons crowds to make a complete day of their center. On most Thursdays and Saturdays, you can enjoy activities from 9am all the way to the River Jam music begins. Check their calendar to see what’s going on.
I got to have a few words with Stephen Warwick of Ancient Cities, who have played River Jam twice in the past.
“We actually played the River Jam this past Saturday, August 15 and it was great. This was our second time playing there and we even had a chance to go rafting before soundcheck this time, which we all remained in the raft despite a few close calls. Performing at River Jam is always a good time. Ancient Cities got a lot of love from the crowd on Saturday, even had a guy blowing a [conch] shell as his form of applause.”
“I think it’s a testament to what River Jam has strived to create, bringing bands and people together in a great environment. We’ve played some great outdoor venues, but definitely none surrounded by white water rapids and zip lines. It’s just as entertaining of a view from the stage as it is from the lawn.”
