The Mainstream: Pearl Jam “Sirens”

Pearl Jam’s second single off of their forthcoming album Lightning Bolt takes the band in the completely opposite direction musically from the first single “Mind Your Manners.” While it is still a guitar heavy rock song, “Sirens” channels the best aspects of 70s classic rock rather than the best of 70s punk like “Mind Your Manners” did. “Sirens” simply reinforces the fact that Pearl Jam is still one of the most talented, and musically aware, rock artists still recording. One of the most surprising things about “Sirens” is that Mike McCready handles the acoustic twelve string parts. I was a little disappointed at first because McCready is the blistering electric guitar solo maestro of Pearl Jam. When I saw McCready’s electric guitar slung across his back though, I knew that a great chill bump inspiring McCready solo was going to show up somewhere, and I wasn’t disappointed. Early in Pearl Jam’s career McCready more of less soloed his way through most PJ songs and rarely played riffs. Seeing him pull out the awe inspiring guitar work a little more selectively now is a hallmark of his, and the band’s, maturation of songwriting over the years.“Sirens” is another solid release off of Lightning Bolt and has allayed all my fears of the album be nothing more than an Eddie Vedder penned punk rock tribute album. October 15th can’t get here fast enough.

Lightning Bolt is available for purchase via CD and iTunes download on Oct. 15th.
